Press release: Biden and Harris inauguration day – transatlantic partnership based on common interests and shared values

President-elect Joe Biden will be sworn in today as the 46th president of the USA.

Alongside Biden will be Kamala Harris who will take oath as the first woman and person of colour to be elected as vice-president.

Henrike Hahn, German Green Member of the European Parliament’s Delegation for relations with the United States of America welcomes the long awaited change.

“EU-US relations will not return to how they were before Donald Trump came to power. We are not going back to the global order of pre Trump days as the world today has changed.

I am looking forward to a closer and much trusted cooperation with the US returning to decency and normalcy in transatlantic relations.

We need better cooperation on core priorities, such us fighting the pandemic and its economic fallout, tackling climate change. We have to find common ground on international trade with high social and ecological standards including the defence of human rights as with China.

President Biden’s initiative to put the US back into the Paris Agreement as one of his first political actions setting a net-zero emissions reduction goal for 2050 is remarkable. While we work in Europe with high pressure to implement the Paris climate goals via Green Deal we hope that we will see very concrete political steps of the Biden administration in that direction as soon as possible.

We in Europe are ready to work hand in hand with our old friends and partners”.
